(Urban) Spaces

 

This text is a summary of the essay on "(Urban) Spaces" in German.

 

This essay aims at providing an introductory approach to the issue of urbanism and space in the literary works of Salvadorean author Horacio Castellanos Moya.  The narrative structures of the novels under discussion reflect how movement through, but also perceptions and representations of space are inevitably bound up with social status and social relations. Consequently, a literary character is also constituted by putting her within a specific urban space. Sociological background is provided with respect to recent developments in urban planning, putting special emphasis on the issue of gated communities and the culture of fear and paranoia they install. Brief descriptions of the urban spaces occurring in the novels try to give a short introduction to the geographical background but, due to the length of this paper, will have to remain on the surface.
